Nature's Temple / Celery (Apium graveolens)

(Apium graveolens)

Benefits:  Celery Seed is useful for the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis and gout.  Especially used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis where there is an associated mental depression.  The diuretic action is involved in the rheumatic conditions and are also used as a urinary antiseptic.  This is mainly due to the volatile oil it contains (apiol).  Also it is used in the treatment of inflammation of the urinary tract and cystitis.  Celery seed oil taken internally increased liver regeneration.

Active Constituents:  Within the celery seed oil there are limonene-type monoterpenes and butyl phthalides.  The essential oil has shown tranquilising and anticonvulsant effects on the central nervous system.  Pthalides are reported to possess antispasmodic, sedative and diuretic actions.

Pharmacological Actions:    Anti-rheumatic, diuretic, antiseptic, sedative, carminative, produces menstruation (emmenagogue)

Contraindications:  To date there is no evidence which has found that Celery should not be used during pregnancy.  The reason this was first commented up was because it was thought it contained significant levels of apiol.  Caution is advised in kidney disorders, particularly inflammation of the kidneys as the essential oil may increase the inflammation.
