Thyme

(Thymus vulgaris)

Parts Used: Leaves and flowering tops

Active constituents:

Volatile oil (2-3%), containing mainly thymol and carvacrol (up to 70%), borneol (15%) and cineole.  Also tannins (10%), saponins, and flavonoids, bitter principle and triterpenoids.

Main Actions:

  • Antiseptic
  • Carminative
  • Astringent
  • Expectorant (encourage expulsion of phlegm from chest)
  • Anti-microbial
  • Antispasmodic
  • Athelmintic (encourages removal of worms)

Major Safety Issues:

  • The oil should not be used internally by small children or the elderly.
  • The oil is highly toxic when ingested.
