Parts Used: Fruit or Leaf
Protodioscin, diosgenin, tribulosin, yamogenin, epismilagenin, tigogenin, neotigogenin, gitogenin and neogitogenin, terrestrinins A (1) and B (2). Beta-sitosterol, vitamin C, potassium and calcium have been isolated from the fruit. The alkaloids harmane and norharmane have been identified.
Major Safety Issues:
Not recommended during pregnancy or lactation. One case of pneumothorax (collapsed lung) upon digestion of the fruit has been reported.
