Active Constituents:

Valepotriates including valetrate and didovaltrate, glycoside (valerosidatum), volatile oil containing esters of acetic, butryic and isovalerianic acids which, on drying, yield isovalerianic acid which gives valerian its distinictive smell.  The oil also contains valerian, camphor, alkaloids, chatinine, valerianine, actinidine and valerine, choline, tannins and resins.

  • Sedative
  • Hypnotic
  • Anti-spasmodic
  • Hypotensive
  • Carminative

Major Safety Issues:

  • Should not be taken for more than 2-3 weeks without a break as continual use may lead to headaches and palpitations.
  • It enhances the action of sleep-inducing drugs and should be avoided if this type of medication is being taken.
