Simple Guide to Liver Cleansing

Your health and well-being depends on how well your body removes and purges toxins. With exposure to environmental toxins, toxic body care products and processed foods, the majority of people are in desperate need of a serious detox. A liver cleanse is a great way to do this. One of the main ways that the body rids itself of toxins is through the liver. In fact, the liver is one of the hardest working organs in the body. It works tirelessly to detoxify our blood; produce the bile needed to digest fat; break down hormones; and store essential vitamins, minerals and iron. When liver function is not optimal, we cannot digest our food properly, especially fats. Some of the essential functions of the liver include: Processing nutrients absorbed by the intestines...

Preventing Gut Upsets During Your Travels

Going on holidays is always fun if not a bit stressful to start off with.  Planning that relaxing or adventurous holiday takes a lot of care and consideration into what needs to be done to pull it off so that everyone has an enjoyable time. But how many of us actually think about taking preventative measures with our gut health before we go? Firstly, start taking off by taking along a good probiotic that has a protective strain of good bacteria in it. This helps to reduce the instances of bad bacteria getting into your gut.  This can happen for any number of reasons, and just a few of them could be due to the water quality, tainted foods (it only takes one little bite of food...

Dirty Dozen List 2017 & the Clean Fifteen 2017 List

The Environmental Working Group released it’s 2017 Dirty Dozen list and it highlights the importance that there is still a lot of work to do when it comes to cleaning up the food chain. This year, the annual report found that almost 70 percent of 48 non-organic samples tested positive for at least one pesticide. (In many cases, the numbers were much higher.) And get this - a single strawberry sample harbored 20 different pesticide residues. And while spinach nutrition is loaded with calcium and vitamins, there’s one reason to always try to choose organic. Researchers found DDT, a neurotoxic insecticide banned in the U.S., in an alarming number of samples. A “Clean 15” list is also included in the report, identifying the non-organic produce least likely to be contaminated with pesticide...

4 Herbs for Gut Health

Your gut doesn’t lie. It gives you that “gut feeling” when something isn’t quite right, “growls” when you’re hungry and gives you that “upset tummy” feeling when there’s something not quite right in your body. The gut is also sensitive to emotion.  If you’re upset or worried you often don’t feel like eating and vice versa.  If you are not feeling well in the tummy, then you can feel sad, upset, worried, anxious, irritated – a range of negative emotions. The gut-brain connection is now widely recognised and for good reason. Around 95% of the brains serotonin receptors are located in your bowel!  So it makes sense that if your gut is not feeling right, it will ultimately affect your mood.  This is another reason why it is so...

5 Herbs you Need to HEAL and RESTORE your LIVER!

[caption id="attachment_4265" align="alignright" width="300"]       St Mary's Thistle (Silybum marianum)[/caption] Food and drink, routinely ingested in the mouth and digested in the stomach would actually be incredibly poisonous for us if we just injected it directly into our blood stream.  That’s why we need a healthy functioning Liver - one of our body’s most important organs. A liver which is not functioning correctly results in digestive problems such as acid reflux, indigestion, poor protein or fat digestion, bloating, pain, sluggishness, low bile production and skin problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and skin rashes.  In addition, symptoms of an overburdened or sluggish liver will result in emotional problems such as anger, low tolerance, mood swings, depression, anxiety, inability to cope or a “wired but tired”...

Why you NEED Magnesium

You are always hearing it said that you need Magnesium, but do you really know why?  Most people just know it as the muscle relaxant that it is and that it can be beneficial after exercise. Magnesium deficiency is one of the leading nutrient deficiencies in the body.  It is now estimated that approximately 80% of people are deficient in magnesium. Typically, in today’s farming societies across the world, soils have been depleted of their natural stores of magnesium due to current farming practices and the use of pesticides and herbicides.   It is also due to digestive disorders that in turn create the malabsorption of magnesium and other minerals throughout the gut along with antibiotic use and prescription medication.  These factors all damage the digestive tract which is...

Most people walk into their chemist or health food store and grab a bottle out of the fridge and expect that they will fix their problem. But do you really know what strain it is that you’re taking or realise that not all strains of probiotics treat the same issue.  Rather, different strains are applicable for different situations. Here’s a quick rundown on why you need probiotics and what strain you possibly should be taking.  When you hear the word “gut instinct” you assume it’s just a saying. Chicken Bone Broth

45584740 - chicken broth, clear soup, stock is cooked in a pan

This is a very old and simple (yet such an effective and tasty) healing recipe for the gastrointestinal tract (which includes the stomach and the intestines).  The bones, marrow skin and tendons contain Collagen and Amino Acids (Proline & Glycine).   Therefore it is an incredibly important addition to any treatment regime for disorders such as Leaky Gut Syndrome, Gastric Ulcers, Reflux, Heartburn and any other conditions associated with GUT inflammation.  A side note to this wonderful healing recipe is that as Collagen supports your Connective Tissue it can help to create youthful, glowing, supple-looking skin.

Any type of marrow bones can be purchased but ensure that they are organic or at least grass-fed, free range.  It doesn’t matter whether they are beef or chicken.  This recipe is done with a whole chicken and can be kept in the fridge for 3-4 days or frozen to be pulled out and defrosted when needed.

Bone broth can be consumed as it is (one glass or more daily – preferable gently warmed before drinking!), used as a base for soups, casseroles or any recipes that requires chicken or beef stock.  A great idea if you are going to freeze for this reason is to pour the stock into ice cube trays before freezing so that you can pop out the cubes when needed!

Another handy tip is that bone broths are really easy to cook in a Slow Cooker.  Just put all the ingredients in and let cook throughout the day while you go about your daily business.
