Food and drink, routinely ingested in the mouth and digested in the stomach would actually be incredibly poisonous for us if we just injected it directly into our blood stream.  That’s why we need a healthy functioning Liver – one of our body’s most important organs.

A liver which is not functioning correctly results in digestive problems such as acid reflux, indigestion, poor protein or fat digestion, bloating, pain, sluggishness, low bile production and skin problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and skin rashes.  In addition, symptoms of an overburdened or sluggish liver will result in emotional problems such as anger, low tolerance, mood swings, depression, anxiety, inability to cope or a “wired but tired” feeling and many more unwanted negative emotions.

As well as the food and drink we consume daily, the general environment of the body needs to be kept in good working order so as not to overburden the liver.  Low Thyroid or Metabolic Disorder can also contribute to overburdening the liver which is called Liver Congestion or Toxic Liver.

The Gall Bladder works in conjunction with the Liver to ensure the organ works as efficiently as possible.  So, when treating and cleansing the Liver, the Gall Bladder should often be included too (unless there are adverse health conditions concurrently with the Gall Bladder).

Herbs that are wonderful for cleansing the Liver and Gall Bladder (without the side-effects of pharmaceutical drugs) are as follows:

Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale) – restores the action of the liver and bile function, helping to relieve intestinal boating, flatulence, loss of appetite, constipation and fluid retention.  It is a bitter tonic, mild laxative and also anti-rheumatic.  However, it is contraindicated in people sensitive to the Ragweed species.

Globe Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) – is a liver protective, restorative and diuretic.  It helps to increase bile flow and reduce associated symptoms such as constipation, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, flatulence, belching and an intolerance to fat consumption.  It is an excellent herb to use for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Jaundice, Gout, Arthritis, high cholesterol and conditions that require a diuretic action such as clearing the complexion and itchy skin.  It is invaluable for the long-term prevention and treatment of Cardiovascular Disease, however is contraindicated in people with gall bladder obstructions.

St Mary’s Thistle (Silybum marianum) –  an antioxidant, liver protective and restorative, it increases the volume of secretion of bile by the liver and the solids secreted.  Great for treating abnormal liver function, fatty liver, liver damage from alcohol, chemical drugs and toxic overload from chemical pollutants (environmental, food and drink).  Excellent for skin conditions that involve liver dysfunction, preventing the formation of gallstones, gall bladder problems, indigestion, heartburn, nausea, belching, upper abdominal pain and the experience of feeling full (even when overeating is not the cause).

Bupleurum (Bupleurum falcatum) – a liver protective and anti-inflammatory, it increases the excretion of toxins via the sweat glands.  Excellent for inflammatory problems, poor liver function due to overburdens, toxins and even conditions such as the flu, common cold and feverish conditions.  It regulates and restores gastrointestinal and liver function, liver enlargement, gastric pain or ulcer development and helps to lower cholesterol.

Schizandra (Schisandra chinensis) – Is an antioxidant, liver protective, tonic for the nerves and adapts to the body’s immediate requirements whilst also being a mild antidepressant. Improves the detoxifying capacity of the liver and acute or chronic liver diseases including hepatitis. Highly recommended for poor liver function, chemical liver damage, spontaneous or night sweats, chronic cough and asthma. At the same time, it is excellent for improving mental function, physical performance, endurance and increased resistance to the effects of stress.  It is however, contraindicated in pregnancy, the early stages of cough, rash or excessive heat patterns in the body.

For immediate results to calm the symptoms of gastric reflux, heartburn or irritation of the gastric system, Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) and/or Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis) can also be added.

The above is indicative of how simple herbs combined synergistically together can assist, cleanse, protect and restore the functioning of the liver and gall bladder, ultimately creating huge improvements in the physical and emotional body of the individual.

Please keep in mind that some herbs are contraindicated for important health reasons so they should only be taken upon advice from a trained and registered Naturopath.
